Why
Blankets?
We use blankets because there are many negative stereotypes about weavers in Ethiopia. We aim to change these stereotypes by creating awareness for their products in the international market. Gabies gives our weavers pride in the quality products they are creating and also contributes to improving Ethiopia’s economic development.
Another reason for blankets is Ethiopia’s richness and abundance in cotton production. While an abundant natural resource in our country, cotton is underutilized in the economic growth of our country. The goal is to have Ethiopia internationally recognized for its production of pure cotton blankets and increased charitable giving .
Finally, we choose blankets because of the awareness our work has brought to my attention. I was able to see a lot of donations being brought to Ethiopia and when mission teams bring donations there was a high demand for blankets among the community, especially around Entoto (the coldest part of Addis). Many times mission teams run out of blanket donations because of the high demand. This made us say “why do we not come up with a system to provide blankets locally?” We have an abundance of cotton in Ethiopia, plus we will be creating an employment opportunity. There are few businesses that make blankets but most of them are purely business-minded, an attempt to give blankets to the needy has not been done yet.
